The Philosophy of Hate: Homophobia

Most people would probably consider themselves either wholly modern or wholly traditional. I think that, myself, I consider myself as somewhere in-between. I am a liminal agent, I live in both the future and the past, blending in a fog in today's present.

Now, why should a figure such as I raise this particular issue: well, I feel that we're beyond the point of pussy-footing around here - I am a member of the LGBTQ community - I'll let you guess which one. But what's most important to me, is why there is so much distaste over the issue of sexuality - why can't people accept that life is a rainbow, not black and white. I used to think that it was just fear, fear of the unknown, fear of some form of personal corruption - but these days, I think it's much more complicated.

There has been a lot written on various websites about these issues. So many that talk of religion, some talk of nature, some people are just unwilling to see other sexualities as anything other than madness, sickness: people in Russia and other countries have tried to connect it with Paedophilia. Now this seems really harsh, but where does it come from. What drives this hate, is it hate?

First, I feel we need to ask the question - what is hate - what is it to have hateful considerations towards another person?

Some people suggest that hate is a cover, that hate is just fear turned outwards, I suppose you could argue that hate is an illness - perhaps it is. What I should dearly love to know, is how can people be so passionate about betraying so many people. Do they not see their own humanity?

What about the woman who wished her own daughter dead because she was a lesbian?

It seems that there's no single reason behind hate. Is hate just another tool of control, there are so many people out there who benefit from the status quo. But is this greed corrupted by hate, or greed influencing hate? Indeed, if we were to take this further down the rabbit hole, what would we find.

Hatred has been observed expressed in many ways, the beheading of that poor soldier in London, plus others. The beheading of those hostages by ISIS, the mass genocide that Hitler had planned for the Jewish community. By spreading hate, do we turn into puppets, into tools of the governments or businesses/corporations who want to keep the status quo, who want to spread their own agenda. Are modern business-people no more than modern warlords or are they in the business of creating conflict, in destroying the other side - do they expand their own boundaries - spread their empire - to propagate their own ideology.

Why does the happiness of so many upset hundreds/thousands/millions of others. What happened to "Live and let live" ?

From the expression of hatred through violence, are we simply demonstrating our flaws, at a societal level - at an individual level - do we all have control issues? Is it an aesthetic concern, the world a painting - and the LGBTQ community just dirty smudges that they don't approve of?

Look at me, I've come all this way and not offered a definition of hatred, neither created one nor took one from a dictionary. One dictionary of hatred is 'intense dislike' which is as inspiring as a blank page of paper.

Ok, let me try this: Hatred - a form of social anxiety whereby people's ability to control their lives is reduced, further highlighting the fact that life is itself chaotic, and such - with regards to homophobia - they find that their perception of a 'Black & White' world is incorrect. People's world view is often a very personal, very sensitive issue and thus any change - however slight, may provoke the strongest reaction of dissent.

However, social anxiety itself is not, and never has been, an excuse for crime. So, so called 'Hate Crimes' are merely a socially abhorrent act whereby a person has intense symptoms of fear - falling into the realms of a phobia. Hence, homophobia is the uncontrollable urge to strike back at the world for not being what people want. This does not excuse the people who hate, and I know that many say 'a haters gonna hate'. But why - why hate - what stops them from considering their own feelings. To be continued...
